Detail information for Aviary for Green Peafowl

1. General requirements

The aviary has to be designed that no fox can entering. It is in our region the only natural predator (aside from stray dogs) for an adult peafowl. In the aviary, the peafowls are locked and could not escape the fox. Who once had a fox in the aviary knows what I'm talking about. Especially when he has offsprings  it can happen quite often that he shows up during the day to search for food for the puppies.

For young animals, the marten is also dangerous. Since this is only active at night, you can prevent it if you will put them into the cot overnight.

2. Size

For a rooster with a hen, we recommend an aviary of at least 70 m2. For the size you should consider that also once there will be some offsprings and then it should also be enough space.

With each additional adult animal the aviary should be made correspondingly larger. But we recommend to keep no more than 1,2 in a group, because during the breeding season, the hens interfere with each other.

The aviary should have a min. height if 2.5 m. So you can provide perches in a good height and a further advantage is, you do not have to stoop when passing through them.

3. Design

The following design notes are only recommendations. They have proven themselves in the best. Of course you are free to do it in another way. However, you should always consider the "General Requirements" and takes into account the required "size", then there are no limitation tor your creativity. Additionally you should thing about the live time of the aviary.

voliere3There are many different possibilities what you will use to design and to build up your aviary. What we not recommend is wood. Depending on the soil conditions it will rot in a very short time and then you are constantly busy to repair your aviary which is very time consuming. In the long term, a durable, weather-resistant solution here will pay off very quickly.

Depending on where you are located geographically voliere4for the construction of the aviary you have to consider all seasons. Especially in winter, the aviary should not collapse when some snow is laying on it.

For the aviary construction we used aluminium profiles (l-profiles) in dimension 60 x 60 x 4 mm. These are cut into the needed length and screwed together.
We selected aluminium profiles because they are very easy to treat and you will have no rust if you will manually drill in a hole afterwards.

The pillars are arranged in a raster of 3x3 m spacing. The raster can be made smaller, but in no way to make it larger. On the upper end all pillars are connected with profiles on which are the upper covering is laying.

Just in the middle of the raster a bracing wire is installed which supports the upper covering of the aviary. The bracing wires are installed in both directions, the bracing wire is hot deep galvanized and has a diameter of 3.2 mm.

voliere2voliere1All around the aviary is framed with concrete plates, size is 30 x 5 cm. As seen in the pictures the outside pillars were integrated into the surrounding.

The concrete plates are 20 cm deep in the ground.  At the joint points and the pillar positions a concrete spot made.

The other 10 cm of the concrete plates are over the ground. These 10 cm are used to fix the surrounding  wire mesh.

For the surrounding of the aviary we recommend a thick hot deep galvanized wire mesh, with a mesh size of 50 x 50 mm and a wire thickness of 2.5 mm. The wire mesh is stretched and fixed to the upper surrounding profile and the pillars with a bindingvoliere6 wire. voliere5The best solution is as shown on the pictures if you will install at the bottom additionally a 500 to 750 mm high Casanet, otherwise small chicks will creep through the mesh of surrounding. This dangerous situation has to be prevented.

At the end you will pull at the bottom into the wire mesh a tensioning wire which is then every 1 m fixed with anchors to the concrete plates.

Finally you have to close the aviary at the top. The fastest and cheapest solution will be a net which you can order in the needed size. We chose the solution with a hot deep galvanized mavoliere8sh. So we are don’t have any figures regarding the live voliere7time of a net.

We chose wire net, because the live time is nearly endless and animals are not able to fret.  Another benefit which is shown over the years is, that snow will not stack that easy on the wire mash, which is a big benefit during the winter time.

To close the aviary on top we recommend a hot deep galvanized wire mesh, with a mesh size of 50 x 50 mm and a wire thickness of 2.2 mm.

4. Establishment

- Ground with grass
- Depending on the size of the aviary one or even more perches
- Dry sanding area, the animals love it when the weather is nice to take a bath in dry humus
- Shadow place for hot weather conditions
